So even though you’d technically be able to run a more modern OS, you might not be able to take advantage of some of the features. Even though you can upgrade it to the point where it SHOULD be able to run Big Sur, there are a lot of new hardware modules on the M1 laptops that weren’t around 10 years ago, like proximity sensors, WiFi 6 support (faster, less susceptible to interference), newer Bluetooth standards, better processors (did I mention M1?), and better hardware security features like WPA3 encryption over WiFi, faster boot drive encryption, and other things that require a beefier processor which are nice to have in a modern era. I’m torn, but a lot of people are saying that you can/should so here’s my argument for why you should put the money towards a replacement instead:īetween the upgrades you’d have to do, you’re probably looking at $270, and at that point you’re well on your way to getting a new M1 Mac.
